Stage 2: Filing Your Paperwork

The most important thing you need to do after understanding your paperwork, knowing how to schedule your ICE check-ins and what to expect at your initial immigration court appearances, and figuring out how to change your address and court as necessary is filing paperwork that will allow you to stay in the United States legally.

If you have a case in immigration court and you qualify for protection from deportation, you must complete and file an application or request for such protection, for example asylum, TPS, etc. Note that some types of protection have filing deadlines.

If you DO NOT have a case in immigration court and you qualify for some type of legal immigration status, you must complete and file an application for that status. The information in this section is designed to help you with a preliminary assessment of determining which status you qualify for.
